The Other End of the Leash, by Patricia McConnell. Canine psychology and training, with lots of anecdotes.

It’s Me or the Dog, by Victoria Stilwell. Great overall introductory guide to understanding and training dogs, for people who don’t want to read a guide – easy to read, lots of photos, bullet points.

The Truth About Dogs, by Stephen Budiansky. Really entertaining look at ancestry, mindset, habits of dogs. Also as an article in the Atlantic Monthly.
